Crossbreds & backyard breeders - our take

It is no secret that registered breeders have a strong disdain for crossbreds and backyard breeders (BYB). However, it's important to clarify that we don't dislike the dogs themselves; our issue is with the breeders, often referred to as "greeders," who produce these crossbreds.

First and foremost, crossbreds (including doodles, oodles, etc.) cannot be ethically bred. Each breed has genetic predispositions and recommended health testing to ensure that dogs do not pass down any harmful traits to their progeny. Additionally, each breed has a breed standard, which outlines the ideal characteristics for the breed, such as appearance, structure, movement, and temperament.

Unfortunately, most BYB and cross-breeders do not DNA test their dogs, irresponsibly combining genetic predispositions and potentially creating health issues such as neurological, skin, stomach, bone and joint problems, blindness and deafness. Moreover, they often breed dogs with very different conformational and skeletal structures, leading to further complications.

These breeders claim that mixing two breeds enhances genetic diversity and health, but this is not true. It is crucial to ensure that a dog has adequate muscle and joints to support its body during strenuous activity.

Are there beautiful dogs out there that happen to be crossbreds? Absolutely! They can be wonderful pets, just like any dog can be. We fully support rescuing a mix from a pound or shelter. However, we do not advocate for, or support crossbreeding or backyard breeding practices.

For the above-mentioned reasons, we sell only neutered/spayed dogs and puppies, or on a neuter/spay contract, to ensure that our dogs are never used in unethical breeding practices once they leave our home.
