"She wanted a Corgi, he wanted a Pug, so they compromised..."
Our story began in 2016 when Tim I met and he soon moved in with me in my 2-bedroom townhouse. At the time, I was on a quest to find the perfect dog to also welcome into my home. To my surprise, Tim had never had the joy of owning a pet growing up. This revelation sparked a shared journey that would shape our lives in ways we never imagined.
Our adventure in finding our first pup started with Tim suggesting a pug. However, my heart was set on a Corgi, a breed I had adored ever since childhood. My fascination with Pembroke Welsh Corgis began with a 1998 Disney movie "Murder She Purred" starring Ricky Lake, where she plays a character named Mary, who owns a charming Pembroke named Tucker. Alongside Mary’s cat "Mrs. Murphy," Tucker helps solve the town murder mystery, leaving an indelible impression on me - a life-long obsession with both murder mysteries, true crime and of course, Pembroke Welsh Corgis!
Determined to find our Corgi, we set out to meet Pembroke breeders at the Dogs ACT grounds in the winter of 2017. There, we quickly came across Mr. and Mrs. Bob and Valerie "Joan" Hutton of Bojojamile Kennels, then based in Londonderry, NSW. Although they had no puppies available at the time, Joan offered us a retired show girl named "Lucia." The following month, we travelled to the Dogs NSW grounds to meet with Joan and Lucia, and agreed to welcome the beautiful 2-year-old Australian Champion Bojojamile Bon Appetite (NBT) into our home. Lucia settled into our home as if she had always belonged there.
When we collected Lucia from Bob and Joan's home in Londonderry, we received a tour of the kennels, met the other Bojojamile dogs, and learned how to conduct a full show groom on Lucia. Joan's detailed grooming lesson ensured we could maintain Lucia's beautiful condition. Having never had a hobby myself, I found the art of grooming cathartic and was excited to practice my newly learned techniques on our newly acquired girl. Later, at the dining table when signing over Lucia's pedigree paperwork, Bob mentioned to me "You could show her you know? She is neutered now, but there is a neutered class, if you wanted to show her?..."
Bob's comment always stuck with me, especially as I would see Joan's Facebook updates on her weekend show expeditions. I knew nothing about dog shows, but I was ready, willing and able to find out. I reached out to Joan and asked if I could come along to a show and learn what it was all about. Joan invited us to spend hers and Bob's annual holiday show trip to Bermagui with them, so off Tim, Lucia & I went.
There I spotted in a trolley, a stunning 12month old Bojojamile Bit of a Hunk "Hudson".... "He's STUNNING!" I proclaimed to Joan...
"You want him? If you really want to show a dog, take him.. He's all yours" Joan says to me. Joan, with the help of handler Alex Mulady, titled Hudson that December and we picked him up 2 weeks later. I took off showing after that and haven't looked back. Hudson was a fantastic dog for me to learn with and I owe him so much, although he was unduly neutered at just 3yrs of age after a testicle torsion. Now an Australian Champion and highly decorated Neuter Champion, Hudson has been collected and frozen, and both Joan & I look forward to using him again someday in the future.
I was then kindly gifted a Hudson daughter from Joan, Elfor Modern Love (NBT) "Jemma", who I raised from 6 months of age and showed to her Australian Championship title.
In December of 2022, I applied for the HUDDYLU prefix, and in October of 2023, Jemma kindly graced me with 3 beautiful babies from 7yr old frozen semen that I was lucky enough to purchase from Joan, out of one of her previous dogs "Finn" Best In Specialty Show & Multiple Best In Show, Australian Supreme Champion Nireno Goldfinger. From this litter, we have retained "Shelby" Huddylu Madam Speaker, and look forward to her adventures in the show ring.
The name “Huddylu”
An ode, if you will, to my first two Pembrokes, Hudson or “Huddy”, and Lucia = Huddylu.
I cannot begin to express how beautifully Hudson and Lucia would have complimented each other as a breeding pair, however when purchasing Lucia, it was originally as a spayed pet before I knew anything about the fabulous world of conformation showing and breeding, and, as mentioned above, once I did begin to get involved in the dog world, Hudson faced an untimely premature neutering due to a testicle torsion, so that was never meant to be. However, rather serendipitously, having my first litter out of a Hudson daughter, and by Lucia’s sire, meant it was as close as could be to having a Huddy-Lu mating.
